The essential notifications are: DVLA (driving licence and V5C), your bank and building society, HMRC, your GP and NHS dentist, your employer, the electoral roll (gov.uk/register-to-vote), Royal Mail redirection, all utility providers (gas, electric, water, broadband), and your insurance providers. See the full list in the tool above.
Update your driving licence online at gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence — it is free and usually processed in 2–4 weeks. Update your V5C (logbook) at the same time at gov.uk/change-address-v5c. Do not drive without updating the V5C — you can be fined up to £1,000.
Go to royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/redirection to set up a redirect. It costs from £33.99 for 3 months. Set it up at least 5 working days before you move. Redirection covers all mail addressed to your old address and forwards it to your new one.
HMRC will continue to send tax correspondence to your old address. You could miss a tax bill, a rebate, or a P60. Update your address through your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk/personal-tax-account or by calling HMRC directly on 0300 200 3310.
Some organisations update instantly online. Banks take 1–3 days. DVLA takes 2–4 weeks. Council services vary by local authority. Allow 4–6 weeks for everything to fully update, and keep your Royal Mail redirection active for at least 6 months to catch anything you miss.
